Meet NuclearSpring

Who We Are

NuclearSpring is a grassroots nonprofit organization committed to ending the threat of nuclear weapons once and for all.  We know that no one is safe as long as these weapons of mass destruction remain on Earth.  Everything we have ever worked toward or hoped for will be destroyed if nuclear weapons are used.

For more than forty years, world leaders have signed treaties and made promises to reduce arsenals, and it worked – reducing nuclear stockpiles by 80%!  Yet the global stockpile still exceeds thirteen thousand warheads. We exist to change that, because that exists to exterminate us.

Our Approach

• Promote Recognition
Do you know anyone who is pro-nuclear war?  Thought so.  We are anti-nuclear war, and we need to recognize that every sane person ultimately is.

• Focus
We don’t care what your politics or other positions are.  Seriously – we don’t want to hear about it and won’t let you bring it in.  Whatever it is, it isn’t important by comparison with nuclear war.

Inspire Policy Sanity
By putting the obvious horror in front of our eyes in a bearable manner, we aim to ease the obvious decisions needed from policy makers.

Action Reverses the Countdown

Your Action Counts in Reversing the Nuclear Countdown

We need to reinvigorate the nuclear disarmament movement, back to when it swelled into mass demonstrations.  What got such a groundswell?  Art did!

Specifically, movies did.  Spend a few hours and watch one of them:  The Day After, a 1983 television movie depicting a nuclear war and the aftermath in one Midwest town, Lawrence, Kansas.

Then read about the effect it had on President Ronald Reagan, leading to treaty after treaty reducing nuclear weapons stockpiles.

We’re not movie makers (we’re from Napa, not Hollywood), but we can make art.

We are making a monumental statue of a mushroom cloud and we’re going to have it as the centerpiece of an annual artistic spectacle.  Starting from Napa, we’ll take our statue on cross-country tour, stopping in towns and cities along the way to put it on display for people to interact with.

Take a look at what we’re planning, and check where we are at the moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome volunteers, interns, and creative collaborators. Drop us a note at team@nuclearspring.org to learn how.

We rely entirely on small grants and individual donations.

Every dollar supports the program:  creating the statue, transporting it and displaying it, and preparing the Spectacle.

Think of a cross between the AIDS Quilt and Burning Man.  Our Art Spectacle will be a creative public event that makes the reality of nuclear weapons impossible to ignore.
